The world as a parish
John Wesley, Journal; letter of 1739
When parish pulpits closed to him, John Wesley stood in fields and market crosses and preached to whoever would stand in the mud. He wrote that he looked upon all the world as his parish. The line is not wanderlust. It is what happens when the established door is shut and the gospel will not wait for permission. Methodism began as an inconvenience to people who liked church indoors.
